Crafted from natural buffalo horn, this exquisite fountain pen tells a story of perseverance and transformation. No two pens are alike, as each buffalo horn base possesses its own distinct character. The cap features a brave koi, captured in intricate maki-e detail, leaping upwards in its determined ascent. The swirling waters of the waterfall flow elegantly along the barrel, with fine vertical golden lines evoking the cascade’s movement.

Inspired by an ancient East Asian legend, this design pays tribute to the koi’s unwavering determination. According to the tale, a school of koi once swam against a relentless river current, reaching a towering waterfall. While many turned back, one koi persisted for years, leaping tirelessly until it finally reached the summit. The gods, recognizing its strength and resolve, transformed the koi into a magnificent golden dragon.

On May 5 every year in Japan, on Japan's Children Day holiday, the Japanese people celebrate koi with koi streamer decor (looks like socks in the shape of koi).

Shishiai togidashi maki-e was applied on this pen. Hakkake technique of using brushes to move different size of gold powders was utilized. Kirigane (gold leaf) and raden was incorporated into the artwork.

About Danitrio Hyotan Fountain Pen Series:

The Hyotan in Japanese means "Gourd" or "Calabash", which is a fruit that can sometimes come in an hourglass shape. This series of pen does come in the hourglass shape; in the US, collectors of Danitrio pens have coined it the Mae West, one of the biggest Hollywood stars in the twentieth century known for her hourglass figure.

Nib Details:

This pen is furnished with an 18k Gold, two-toned #6 nib. What has been described by many Danitrio collectors as the fireball nib is an image of “Kaen-Kohai” which is a flame-shaped halo of “Fudo Myoo” (Acala, the God of Fire). This halo is commonly painted on the back of Japanese Buddhist statues.

An UrushiPen.com representative will contact you to confirm nib tip size preference (fine, medium, broad, or stub) following the placement of the order.
